Upcoming catalystThe event that could move the share price.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on Friday 23 October 2026 on Xbox Series X and S, PC, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, the first Call of Duty on Nintendo’s new console. The official Xbox store page says it will not be available with Game Pass at launch, and that digital pre-orders receive early access to the open beta plus campaign early access from 16 October, a week before release. The date is confirmed; regional midnight rollouts make the exact global hour approximate.
Main stock affectedThe company the event affects most directly.
Microsoft Corporation, Nasdaq ticker MSFT.
Current priceWhere the shares traded when this write-up was made, and when that was.
$498 as of 22 Sept 2026, 20:00 UTC, the regular-session close.
Expected stock reactionWhich way we expect the share price to go after the event. Positive means it rises, Negative means it falls, Mixed means it could go either way.
Mixed, and very small. Positive if early paid sales and player numbers are strong, especially on Switch 2, because Xbox content revenue fell 10% last quarter and needs a hit. Negative only in the unlikely case of a broken launch; otherwise the game is too small a part of Microsoft for the stock to notice.
Action before the eventWhat we suggest you do before the event. Buy, Watch or Avoid.
Watch. Call of Duty is the biggest franchise in Microsoft's gaming business, but gaming is well under a tenth of Microsoft's revenue, and the last two Call of Duty launch days moved the stock by less than an ordinary day. Microsoft reports results on 28 October, five days later, and that is the event that will move the stock.
Why the stock is affectedThe link between the event and this company.
Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard to make gaming a larger, steadier business, and Call of Duty is the centre of that. Xbox content and services revenue fell 10% in the June quarter, against a strong prior year and with impairment charges, while hardware fell 13%. Modern Warfare 4 is the first Call of Duty to launch on Switch 2, widening the paid audience; because it is not on Game Pass at launch, this release tests full-price demand rather than subscription sign-ups.
Catalyst confidenceHow sure we are that the event happens as described. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
The release date is fixed and published by Microsoft and Activision, and pre-orders are open on every platform. Confidence that the game launches on 23 October: 95%.
Stock-reaction confidenceHow sure we are that the stock reacts the way we expect. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
Low. At a market value of about $3.70 trillion, driven by Azure and AI, Microsoft does not move on a single game. Confidence in the reaction: 35%.
When the market will reactThe moment the price is likely to move, such as at the announcement or at the next market open.
Pre-orders carry campaign early access from 16 October, so the first reviews and the first player reaction to the campaign arrive a week before release rather than on the day. By the US open at 13:30 UTC on 23 October the multiplayer launch numbers and the campaign verdict should both be circulating. Microsoft rarely publishes sales figures on launch day.
Effect on the businessWhat the event changes for the company itself, such as its sales, costs or profit.
Meaningful for gaming, small for Microsoft. A successful full-price Call of Duty launch lifts Xbox content revenue in the December quarter, but it will not provide a day-one Game Pass subscription boost. Against Microsoft’s trailing revenue of $331.84 billion, even a record launch is a small number.
Market expectations and forecastWhat investors already expect from this event, and the numbers being forecast.
Expectations for the game are high, as they are every year for the franchise. Expectations for its effect on the stock are close to zero: the market values Microsoft on Azure, which grew 43% in the June quarter and passed $100 billion for the fiscal year, and on its AI business. My forecast is a strong launch with record platform reach because of Switch 2, reported by Microsoft in general terms rather than figures, and no measurable effect on the stock.
How much is already priced inHow much of the expected outcome the share price already reflects before the event happens.
Fully. A new Call of Duty every autumn is part of every model of Microsoft's gaming business. The stock has risen 33.18% in three months on Azure and AI, not on games.
Expected price move and durationHow far the share price may move because of this event, and how long that move may last.
Options-Implied Move I cannot confirm a figure for this event. Options expiring after 23 October also cover Microsoft’s results on 28 October, and nothing in their price can be attributed to a game launch. Historical Event Analysis Measured from Polygon’s daily bars, on the launch day of each game. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, launched on 25 October 2024: the shares rose 0.81%, from $424.73 to $428.15. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, launched on 14 November 2025: the shares rose 1.37%, from $503.29 to $510.18. Historical Average Move Plus 1.09%, the average of the two. Both launches were up days, but both moves were smaller than the stock’s average daily range, so they cannot be told apart from ordinary trading. Our Expected Move Plus 0.5% to plus 2% if early player numbers and paid sales are strong. Minus 0.5% to minus 2% only if the launch is broken or badly received. Both sides sit inside the stock’s average true range of 2.09% of the price. Impact Strength Low. A game launch is a rounding error for a company of this size. Estimated Duration Intraday. Microsoft’s results on 28 October will replace whatever the launch does. None of these three percentages is the same claim. The options figure would be what the market charges, the historical figure is what the last two launches did, and the expected move is my own conclusion.
What else lands that dayOther news and events on the same day that could push the price around, and whether they help this trade, bury it, or work against it.
The day is clear of anything that competes with this launch, but the week is not. Apple's iPhone Duo goes on sale the same day, which draws technology attention but has no read-through to Microsoft. Microsoft reports fiscal first quarter results after the close on 28 October, and the Federal Reserve meets on 27 and 28 October. Both matter far more to the stock than any game. Net effect: the move on 23 October is about the market and the approach of results, with the game a minor factor.
Result needed for a big moveWhat the outcome has to be for the stock to move a lot instead of a little.
Nothing a game launch can supply. The stock will move on Azure growth, AI capacity and capital spending at the results on 28 October.
Possible outcomesThe main ways the event could turn out, with the expected stock reaction for each one.
Positive outcome. Strong early player numbers and paid sales, especially on Switch 2. Expected stock reaction: a rise of 0.5% to 2%. Neutral outcome. A solid launch with no figures. Expected stock reaction: a move under 0.5% attributable to the game. This is the most likely outcome. Negative outcome. Server failures or poor reviews. Expected stock reaction: a fall of 0.5% to 2%.
Other affected stocksOther companies that could move on the same news, such as suppliers and competitors.
Take-Two, which releases Grand Theft Auto VI in November, competes for the same players and holiday spending. Sony, through its US-listed shares, sells the PlayStation version. GameStop sells physical copies.
What the market may be missingSomething we think investors have overlooked or read wrong.
The Switch 2 version, not the game itself. Microsoft committed to bringing Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms as part of winning approval for the Activision deal. Modern Warfare 4 is the first to arrive on Switch 2. If it sells well there, it confirms that Microsoft's gaming strategy is shifting from selling Xbox consoles to selling games everywhere, which fits the 13% fall in Xbox hardware revenue. That is a slow change in the shape of the gaming business, not a stock catalyst this week.
Main risksWhat could go wrong, and what would prove this call wrong.
The first risk is the gaming business itself. Xbox content revenue fell 10% last quarter, and a weak Call of Duty would make that trend harder to reverse. The second is paid demand. Without Game Pass at launch, weak full-price sales cannot be offset by an immediate subscription boost. The third is timing. Results arrive five days later, and any disappointment on Azure would outweigh anything here.
Other factorsAnything else worth knowing that the sections above do not cover.
Microsoft holds $76.84 billion of cash against $128.81 billion of debt, produced $66.99 billion of free cash flow over the trailing year after heavy AI spending, and pays a dividend of $3.92 a year, a yield of 0.79%.
Trend over 6 to 12 monthsWhich way the share price has been heading over the past year, and how far it has travelled.
A sharp recovery from a deep fall. The shares are up 33.18% over three months and 30.03% over six months, but down 3.85% over the last 52 weeks. The 52-week range runs from $349.20 on 25 June 2026 to $553.72 on 28 October 2025, and the 22 September close sits 72.8% of the way up it, 10.06% below the high and 42.61% above the low.
Recent price actionWhat the shares have done over the last few weeks and sessions, and on what kind of volume.
The stock opened at $507.32 on 22 September and closed lower after trading as low as $493.65, giving up about 1.8% from the open. The last month has been flat, up 3.05%, after the strong summer rally.
Market structureThe shape of the chart. Rising highs and rising lows mean an uptrend, falling ones mean a downtrend, and neither means the price is stuck in a range.
A strong rise from the June low, now pausing below $510.
Support and resistance zonesPrice areas where buyers have stepped in before, and price areas where sellers have. They often slow the price down when it gets there again.
Resistance is $508.50, the 22 September high, then $553.72, the 52-week high. Support is $493.65, the 22 September low, then the 50-day average at $469.15.
50-day and 200-day moving averagesThe average closing price over the last 50 days and the last 200 days. Where the price sits against them shows whether the recent trend is strong or fading.
A moving average is the average closing price over that many trading days, drawn as a line so the trend is visible without reading every session. The 50-day average is $469.15 and the 200-day is $431.76. The 22 September close was 6.15% above the 50-day and 15.34% above the 200-day, and the 50-day sits $37.39 above the 200-day. That is the arrangement of an uptrend.
Relative strengthHow this stock has performed against the wider market and against its own sector over the same period.
Against the Nasdaq 100 tracking fund Microsoft trails by 1.72 percentage points over one month, leads by 28.44 over three months and 2.91 over six months, and trails by 28.56 over twelve months, minus 3.85% against plus 24.71%. The summer rally has recovered part of a very weak year.
Volume trendHow many shares are changing hands lately compared with normal. Heavy volume behind a move means more traders agree with it.
Falling. The 20-day average is 21,547,805 shares against a 50-day average of 29,073,248, about 25.9% lower. The rally is resting on light volume.
VolatilityHow much the share price swings day to day right now, compared with how much it usually swings.
The 14-day average true range is $10.42, or 2.09% of the price, and the average daily high-to-low range over 20 sessions is $9.75, or 1.96%. Realised volatility is 22.57% over 14 days and 40.76% over 50 days, annualised.
Long-Term Technical ViewThe wider chart over years. The big trend, the major price levels and how much the stock swings.
The long-term support is the June 2026 low at $349.20 and the long-term resistance is the October 2025 high at $553.72.
Technical biasWhat the chart alone suggests, ignoring the news. Rated Bullish, Neutral or Bearish.
Bullish. The price is above both averages and the 50-day is above the 200-day. The caution is the fading volume and the pause over the last month. The bullish chart does not contradict the mixed call. The chart describes the trend going into results; the game launch has no bearing on it.
What would invalidate this biasThe price level or chart change that would prove the technical read wrong.
A daily close below the 50-day average at $469.15 would turn it neutral. A close below the 200-day at $431.76 would turn it bearish.

Stock OverviewThe basic numbers. Price, size of the company, sector, the past year of highs and lows, trading volume and the next earnings date.
Market value is approximately $3.70 trillion on 7.43 billion shares. Microsoft operates in the technology sector and the software industry. Its 52-week range is $349.20 to $553.72. Recent average daily volume is about 21.5 million shares. Modern Warfare 4 launches on 23 October 2026 and fiscal first quarter results are due after the close on 28 October.
What the company doesThe business in plain words. What it sells, who buys it, and how the money reaches the company.
Microsoft sells cloud computing through Azure, business software including Office and Dynamics, Windows, LinkedIn, search advertising and gaming through Xbox, Activision Blizzard and Game Pass. It is also a major investor in and partner of OpenAI.
Revenue BreakdownWhere the money comes from, split by product, by part of the business and by country.
Fiscal fourth quarter 2026 revenue, to 30 June, was about $90 billion, up 18%. Microsoft Cloud revenue was $59.3 billion, up 27%, and Azure grew 43%. Xbox content and services revenue fell 10% and Xbox hardware fell 13%. Trailing twelve-month revenue is $331.84 billion.
Company GrowthHow sales, profit, earnings per share and spare cash have changed over the last few years.
Revenue grew 18% in the latest quarter, and Azure passed $100 billion for the fiscal year, up 41%. Company growth is High for a company of this size.
Earnings PerformanceThe latest results, whether they beat or missed what the market expected, and what the company says comes next.
Fourth-quarter earnings were $4.74 a share, up 23% after adjusting for the OpenAI investment, and revenue beat expectations. Microsoft said Azure demand still exceeds available capacity.
Financial HealthCash, debt, cash flow and profit margins, and whether the company keeps issuing new shares. Rated Strong, Average or Weak.
Cash is $76.84 billion against $128.81 billion of debt, and trailing free cash flow is $66.99 billion after very heavy capital spending on AI data centres. Financial health is Strong.
ValuationWhat you pay today for what the company earns, next to its rivals and its own past. Rated Cheap, Fair or Expensive.
The trailing price to earnings ratio is about 27.7 on trailing earnings of $17.95 a share, and the forward ratio about 25.2. Price to sales is about 11.1 and the PEG ratio about 1.6. These ratios show how much you pay today for each dollar of profit. For a company growing earnings above 20%, they put Microsoft at Fair value.
ShareholdersWho owns the company. Big funds, company insiders, and whether ownership sits with only a few holders.
Institutions own about 75.21% of the shares. Short interest is 1.00% of the float.
Insider ActivityWhether the people running the company have been buying or selling their own shares lately.
I cannot confirm any specific open-market insider transaction in the period covered by this card, so I am not quoting one.
Dividends and BuybacksCash paid out to shareholders, whether that payment looks safe, and whether the company is buying back its own shares.
The dividend is $3.92 a year, a yield of 0.79%. Microsoft also buys back stock.
Competitive PositionWho the company competes with, how much of the market it holds, and what it has that rivals do not.
In cloud Microsoft competes with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud; in gaming with Sony, Nintendo, Take-Two and Tencent. Its advantage is the breadth of its business software and its enterprise relationships. The weakness in gaming is a console business that is shrinking.
Future OutlookWhat sales and profit are expected to do next, and what management has promised.
My view is positive on the company. Azure is growing above 40% with demand exceeding capacity, and profits are growing above 20%. The risks are the cost of the AI build-out and the gaming business, which is shrinking.
Other Upcoming Company CatalystsOther events ahead that could move the share price, such as results, launches or approvals, apart from the catalyst this report is built on.
Fiscal first quarter results on 28 October, with Azure growth and capital spending guidance the key figures, and the holiday gaming season.
Long-Term Company RisksWhat could weaken the business over the coming years, rather than around this one event.
The largest long-term risk is that AI capital spending fails to earn a return. The second is competition in cloud. The third is regulation, including of the gaming business and the OpenAI partnership.
Traderavel VerdictOur straight answer on the company after everything above, not on the trade. Quality, growth, price, risk and the long-term view.
Microsoft is a high-quality company growing fast for its size, at a fair valuation, with a gaming business that is the weakest part of it. Growth is high, financial health is strong and company risk is low. Modern Warfare 4 is an important launch for Xbox and a minor event for the stock. The card suits investors who want to watch whether the gaming business can turn before results, and it does not suit anyone expecting a game to move a $3.7 trillion company.
