Upcoming catalystThe event that could move the share price.
Mark Zuckerberg gives the Meta Connect 2026 keynote at 16:00 Pacific on Wednesday 23 September 2026, which is 23:00 UTC, after the US market has closed. Connect runs on 23 and 24 September at Meta's campus in Menlo Park and is livestreamed. Meta has confirmed the date and time on its own Connect site. The keynote is expected to show new AI glasses, including camera-free styles and a third generation of the Ray-Ban Display, a thin mixed reality headset codenamed Phoenix, and updates on the Muse assistant and Meta's next AI models.
Main stock affectedThe company the event affects most directly.
Meta Platforms, Inc., Nasdaq ticker META.
Current priceWhere the shares traded when this write-up was made, and when that was.
$741.25 as of 21 Sept 2026, 20:00 UTC, the regular-session close.
Expected stock reactionWhich way we expect the share price to go after the event. Positive means it rises, Negative means it falls, Mixed means it could go either way.
Mixed. Positive if Zuckerberg pairs the hardware with hard numbers on Muse, such as users or engagement, and a date for the next AI model, because Muse is what the stock has just been re-rated on. Negative if the keynote is mostly glasses and headsets with no new Muse numbers, because a stock up 35.80% in a month has little room for a hardware show.
Action before the eventWhat we suggest you do before the event. Buy, Watch or Avoid.
Watch. The stock rose 11.34% on 21 September alone and now sits within a few dollars of the analyst consensus target. Connect has never moved this stock by more than 1% in the two years that can be measured, so the event itself is not the trade. The trade is whether the Muse rally holds once the market has a keynote to judge it against, and that can be read on 24 September.
Why the stock is affectedThe link between the event and this company.
Meta makes almost all its money from advertising, and almost all its spending is on AI. The market has spent a year doubting that the spending would produce a product people use. Muse, Meta's personal AI assistant, has just answered part of that: it went to number one on Apple's US App Store and passed 2.5 million downloads within days, and the stock had its best day in 13 months. Connect is the first time since then that Zuckerberg speaks on stage. The glasses and the headset are the headline products, but the market will be listening for what he says about Muse.
Catalyst confidenceHow sure we are that the event happens as described. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
The keynote is confirmed by Meta with a date, a time and a livestream, and Connect has run every autumn for years. Confidence that the event happens as scheduled: 98%.
Stock-reaction confidenceHow sure we are that the stock reacts the way we expect. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
Low. The two measured Connect keynotes moved the stock less than 1%, and this one arrives straight after an 11.34% day that the market has not yet digested. The keynote could extend that move or become the moment the market takes profits, and the evidence does not favour either. Confidence in the reaction: 45%.
When the market will reactThe moment the price is likely to move, such as at the announcement or at the next market open.
The keynote starts at 23:00 UTC on 23 September, three hours after the close, and is streamed live, so after-hours trading sees it in real time. The first liquid reaction is the regular session on 24 September, which opens at 13:30 UTC. The developer session at 17:00 UTC on 24 September falls inside that session but has not moved the stock in past years.
Effect on the businessWhat the event changes for the company itself, such as its sales, costs or profit.
Small, directly. Reality Labs, the division that makes the glasses and headsets, had revenue of $431 million in the second quarter of 2026, up 16%, against an operating loss of $4.62 billion. That is well under 1% of Meta's $60.8 billion quarterly revenue. No pair of glasses changes that arithmetic this year. The indirect effect is larger. Glasses are Meta's bet on owning the device that the next AI assistant runs on, rather than renting space on Apple's and Google's phones. The new camera-free glasses, built around microphones for talking to an assistant, make that link explicit. If Muse is the assistant and the glasses are where it lives, Connect is where Meta shows the two joined up.
Market expectations and forecastWhat investors already expect from this event, and the numbers being forecast.
Analysts want AI news more than hardware news. Citi expects updates on Muse and on Meta's next generation of AI models. Wells Fargo raised its target to $796 from $640 on 21 September and Citi's target is $800, while the average target is about $763.67, only about 3% above the close. The consensus rating is Strong Buy, with 38 buy ratings, 6 holds and no sells. My forecast is that Meta shows new glasses with prices and ship dates, previews the Phoenix headset, and gives at least one new Muse figure. That would be a good keynote, and I still expect only a small move, because the good news of the week arrived two days earlier.
How much is already priced inHow much of the expected outcome the share price already reflects before the event happens.
High. The stock has risen 35.80% in a month and 21.38% since the close of $610.68 on 3 September. On 21 September it rose 11.34%, from $665.75 to $741.25, on volume of 48.72 million shares, about 2.4 times its 20-day average. It sits just below the average target of $763.67 and 5.66% below its 52-week high of $785.73. A stock that has moved this far this fast has already paid for a good keynote. What is not priced in is a disappointment, because nothing in the last month has prepared the market for one.
Expected price move and durationHow far the share price may move because of this event, and how long that move may last.
Options-Implied Move I cannot confirm a current figure for this event. Implied volatility on this stock has moved sharply with the 11.34% day, and any quote taken before this is published would describe a different market from the one the keynote lands in. Historical Event Analysis Measured from Polygon's daily bars. Connect 2024, keynote during the session on 25 September 2024: the shares rose 0.88% that day, from $563.33 to $568.31, and were flat the next day. Connect 2025, keynote after the close on 17 September 2025: the shares rose 0.58% on 18 September 2025, from $775.72 to $780.25. Historical Average Move Plus 0.73%, the average of the two. Two events is a small sample, but it is a consistent one: Connect has been a sub-1% event for this stock. Our Expected Move Plus 2% to plus 4% if the keynote adds new Muse user or engagement numbers and a date for the next AI model alongside priced, dated glasses. Minus 3% to minus 6% if the keynote is mostly hardware and gives nothing new on Muse, as the market takes profit on the fastest month in the stock's recent history. Both sides are wider than the 0.73% Connect has averaged, because the starting point is different. The last two keynotes landed on a stock that had not just risen 11.34% in a day. The downside is wider than the upside because the rally has already used up most of the room to the analyst targets. Impact Strength Low. Connect has been a small event for this stock, and it will stay one unless it changes what the market believes about Muse. Estimated Duration 1 to 2 trading days. The next hard number is third-quarter earnings in late October, where the capital spending guidance will matter far more than any keynote. None of these three percentages is the same claim. The options figure would be what the market charges, the historical figure is what the last two keynotes did, and the expected move is my own conclusion from both and from the rally the keynote lands on.
What else lands that dayOther news and events on the same day that could push the price around, and whether they help this trade, bury it, or work against it.
The day is clear of anything that competes with this keynote. On 24 September weekly jobless claims are published at 12:30 UTC and August new home sales at 14:00 UTC, both routine. Tesla's Semi factory opening is the same day and has no read-through to Meta. Micron, the one AI results day that could move large technology stocks, reports on 30 September, a week later. The Federal Reserve met on 15 and 16 September and has already decided. One company story is live: reports that Amazon has moved to block Muse from its shopping pages. It is not an event on the calendar, but anything Zuckerberg says about Muse shopping will be read against it. Net effect: the move on 24 September will be about Meta.
Result needed for a big moveWhat the outcome has to be for the stock to move a lot instead of a little.
A number. A Muse figure well beyond the 2.5 million downloads already reported, such as tens of millions of users or a strong engagement figure, together with a date for the next frontier model, would tell the market the AI spending has found a product. That is what could take the stock through the $785.73 high. On the other side, a keynote spent on hardware, with Muse mentioned in passing, would give the market an excuse to take profit on a 35.80% month.
Possible outcomesThe main ways the event could turn out, with the expected stock reaction for each one.
Positive outcome. New Muse user numbers, a next-model date and glasses with prices and ship dates. Expected stock reaction: a rise of 2% to 4%, toward the $785.73 high of 22 September 2025. Neutral outcome. Good hardware, a brief Muse update, no new numbers. Expected stock reaction: a move of 1% in either direction, in line with the last two Connects. This is the most likely outcome. Negative outcome. Hardware only, or a live demonstration that fails on stage, with nothing new on Muse. Expected stock reaction: a fall of 3% to 6%, toward the $679.60 low of 21 September, the bottom of the gap that day opened.
Other affected stocksOther companies that could move on the same news, such as suppliers and competitors.
EssilorLuxottica, which makes the Ray-Ban and Oakley frames, trades in Paris and is the direct partner on the glasses. In the US, Alphabet and Apple are the platform owners Meta's glasses aim to route around, and Snap sells its own AR glasses. Qualcomm supplies the chips in Meta's glasses and headsets. Amazon is the company reported to be blocking Muse.
What the market may be missingSomething we think investors have overlooked or read wrong.
Connect used to be a question about Reality Labs losses. This year it is a question about Muse, and the market is treating it as a hardware event. The numbers make the point. Reality Labs lost $4.62 billion in the second quarter on revenue of $431 million, and it would take years of glasses sales to change that. Meta is guiding to $130 billion to $145 billion of capital spending this year, almost all of it on AI. The glasses do not justify that bill. An AI assistant that people use every day could. The most important sentence in the keynote may be one about Muse, not about a device. The overlooked risk is that a stock which rose 11.34% on download rankings has no evidence yet of retention. A keynote without a usage number leaves the rally resting on a week of app store charts.
Main risksWhat could go wrong, and what would prove this call wrong.
The first risk is profit-taking. A 35.80% month and an 11.34% day leave a large gap, from $665.75 to $679.60, that has not been tested, and a disappointing keynote is the obvious trigger. The second risk is the live demonstration. Meta's 2025 glasses demo failed on stage in part, and a failure on Muse this year would be more costly. The third risk is capital spending. At $130 billion to $145 billion this year the bill is huge, free cash flow fell to $784 million in the second quarter, and any hint of higher spending would outweigh any product. The fourth risk is Muse's reach, which depends on platforms Meta does not control, as the Amazon reports show.
Other factorsAnything else worth knowing that the sections above do not cover.
Meta holds $90.26 billion of cash against $112.32 billion of total debt, now in net debt because it is borrowing to build data centres. It pays a dividend of $2.10 a year, a yield of 0.28%, and buys back stock.
Trend over 6 to 12 monthsWhich way the share price has been heading over the past year, and how far it has travelled.
Up sharply over three months, down over twelve. The shares are up 35.80% over the last month, 31.46% over three months and 24.86% over six months, but down 5.00% over the last 52 weeks. The 52-week range runs from $520.26 on 27 March 2026 to $785.73 on 22 September 2025, and the close of $741.25 on 21 September 2026 sits 83.2% of the way up it, 5.66% below the high and 42.48% above the low.
Recent price actionWhat the shares have done over the last few weeks and sessions, and on what kind of volume.
Two jumps in two weeks. On 9 September the stock rose 6.55%, from $613.48 to $653.69, on 35.90 million shares, almost twice the average. It then climbed steadily to $682.31 on 17 September, fell back to $665.75 on 18 September, and on 21 September opened at $680.29 and rose 11.34% to $741.25, touching $753.00 intraday. The 21 September move left a gap between the prior close of $665.75 and that day's low of $679.60. Gaps like that are often revisited, and it sits right under the stock ahead of the keynote.
Market structureThe shape of the chart. Rising highs and rising lows mean an uptrend, falling ones mean a downtrend, and neither means the price is stuck in a range.
Higher highs and higher lows since early September, with each step up larger than the last. From $610.68 on 3 September to $741.25 on 21 September the stock gained 21.38% in twelve sessions with only one meaningful down day. That is a strong trend, and it is also a stretched one.
Support and resistance zonesPrice areas where buyers have stepped in before, and price areas where sellers have. They often slow the price down when it gets there again.
Resistance is $753.00, the intraday high of 21 September, then $785.73, the 52-week high. Support is the gap from $665.75 to $679.60, then $682.31, the close of 17 September, which sits inside the level just below it. Below that, $653.69, the close of 9 September.
50-day and 200-day moving averagesThe average closing price over the last 50 days and the last 200 days. Where the price sits against them shows whether the recent trend is strong or fading.
A moving average is the average closing price over that many trading days, drawn as a line so the trend is visible without reading every session. The 50-day average is $608.82 and the 200-day is $624.63. The close is 21.75% above the 50-day and 18.67% above the 200-day. The 50-day is still $15.81 below the 200-day, a leftover of the weak spring, but it is rising fast and a crossover above the 200-day is close. A price this far above both averages is unusual for a stock of this size.
Relative strengthHow this stock has performed against the wider market and against its own sector over the same period.
Against the Nasdaq 100 tracking fund, Meta is ahead by 31.50 percentage points over one month, 35.80% against 4.30%, and by 30.98 points over three months. Over six months it trails by 2.53 points and over twelve months by 29.55 points, minus 5.00% against plus 24.55%. The recent strength has recovered most of a very weak year in a single quarter.
Volume trendHow many shares are changing hands lately compared with normal. Heavy volume behind a move means more traders agree with it.
Rising. The 20-day average is 20,422,078 shares against a 50-day average of 18,134,032, about 12.6% higher, and the two big up days came on volume of 35.90 million and 48.72 million. Buyers are behind this move, not just the absence of sellers.
VolatilityHow much the share price swings day to day right now, compared with how much it usually swings.
The 14-day average true range is $27.34, or 3.69% of the price, and the average daily high-to-low range over 20 sessions is $21.61, or 2.91%. Realised volatility is 50.76% over 14 days and 45.99% over 50 days, annualised, high for a megacap. A normal day is now close to 3%, which is larger than any Connect reaction on record.
Long-Term Technical ViewThe wider chart over years. The big trend, the major price levels and how much the stock swings.
The long-term support is the March 2026 low at $520.26 and the long-term resistance is the September 2025 high at $785.73. The stock is back near the top of that range.
Technical biasWhat the chart alone suggests, ignoring the news. Rated Bullish, Neutral or Bearish.
Bullish. The price is above both moving averages, the structure is higher highs and higher lows, and volume is confirming the move. The only warning is how stretched it is: 21.75% above the 50-day, with an open gap underneath. The bullish chart does not contradict the mixed call. The chart says the trend is up. The catalyst view says the event on 23 September lands at the point where the trend is most stretched, so a disappointment would hit hardest now. I weight the chart more heavily beyond this week and the catalyst more heavily for 24 September.
What would invalidate this biasThe price level or chart change that would prove the technical read wrong.
A daily close below $665.75, filling the 21 September gap entirely, would turn it neutral. A close below $653.69 would say the September rally has failed.

Stock OverviewThe basic numbers. Price, size of the company, sector, the past year of highs and lows, trading volume and the next earnings date.
META closed at $741.25 on 21 September 2026. Market value is approximately $1.89 trillion on 2.55 billion shares. It operates in the communication services sector and the internet content industry. Its 52-week range is $520.26 to $785.73. Recent average daily volume is about 20.4 million shares. The Connect keynote is on 23 September 2026 and third-quarter results are due in late October.
What the company doesThe business in plain words. What it sells, who buys it, and how the money reaches the company.
Meta runs Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, and earns almost all its revenue by selling advertising on them. Reality Labs makes the Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses and the Quest headsets. The company is spending more than any other on AI, both to improve its ads and to build assistants such as Muse.
Revenue BreakdownWhere the money comes from, split by product, by part of the business and by country.
Second-quarter 2026 revenue was $60.8 billion, up 28%. Reality Labs contributed $431 million; almost everything else was advertising across the family of apps. Trailing twelve-month revenue is $228.25 billion.
Company GrowthHow sales, profit, earnings per share and spare cash have changed over the last few years.
Revenue was $134.90 billion in 2023, $164.50 billion in 2024 and $200.97 billion in 2025, compound growth of about 22.1% a year, calculated as the square root of $200.97 billion divided by $134.90 billion, minus one. Trailing revenue is up 27.65% on a year earlier. Company growth is High.
Earnings PerformanceThe latest results, whether they beat or missed what the market expected, and what the company says comes next.
The second quarter beat on revenue and missed on profit. Diluted earnings per share were $6.18, down 13% from $7.14 and below the roughly $7.22 expected, as total expenses rose 55% to $42 billion. Operating income was $18.8 billion, a 31% margin. Guidance for the third quarter is revenue of $61 billion to $64 billion, a midpoint about 1% below the consensus at the time.
Financial HealthCash, debt, cash flow and profit margins, and whether the company keeps issuing new shares. Rated Strong, Average or Weak.
Cash is $90.26 billion against total debt of $112.32 billion. Trailing free cash flow is $40.98 billion, but second-quarter free cash flow fell to $784 million as capital spending reached $31.1 billion in the quarter. Financial health is Strong: the advertising business produces enough cash to fund the build-out, but the margin for error is thinner than a year ago.
ValuationWhat you pay today for what the company earns, next to its rivals and its own past. Rated Cheap, Fair or Expensive.
The trailing price to earnings ratio is about 27.9 on trailing earnings of $26.54 a share, and the forward ratio about 23.1. Price to sales is about 8.3, enterprise value to EBITDA about 17.4 and the PEG ratio about 1.15. These ratios show how much you pay today for each dollar of profit. Against growth of more than 20% a year, they put Meta at Fair value rather than expensive, even after the rally.
ShareholdersWho owns the company. Big funds, company insiders, and whether ownership sits with only a few holders.
Institutions own about 67.85% of the shares and insiders about 13.42%, most of it Mark Zuckerberg's, whose voting control is larger than his economic stake. Short interest is 1.31% of the float.
Insider ActivityWhether the people running the company have been buying or selling their own shares lately.
I cannot confirm any specific open-market insider transaction in the period covered by this card, so I am not quoting one.
Dividends and BuybacksCash paid out to shareholders, whether that payment looks safe, and whether the company is buying back its own shares.
The dividend is $2.10 a year, a yield of 0.28%. Meta also buys back stock, though capital spending now takes priority over buybacks.
Competitive PositionWho the company competes with, how much of the market it holds, and what it has that rivals do not.
In advertising Meta competes with Alphabet, Amazon and TikTok. In AI assistants it competes with OpenAI, Google and Apple. In smart glasses it is the clear leader with EssilorLuxottica, with Google, Apple and Snap all working on rivals. The advantage is reach: more than three billion people use its apps every day, which gives any assistant it launches an audience no start-up has. The weakness is that the phones those people use belong to Apple and Google, which is exactly why the glasses matter.
Future OutlookWhat sales and profit are expected to do next, and what management has promised.
My view is positive on the company. The advertising business is growing above 20%, Muse is the first sign that the AI spending can produce a consumer product at scale, and the glasses give Meta a path to its own device. The risk is the size of the capital bill.
Other Upcoming Company CatalystsOther events ahead that could move the share price, such as results, launches or approvals, apart from the catalyst this report is built on.
The developer session on 24 September, third-quarter results in late October with the 2027 capital spending outlook, and any usage figures for Muse are the next catalysts. The reported Amazon block on Muse is a live story that could develop either way.
Long-Term Company RisksWhat could weaken the business over the coming years, rather than around this one event.
The largest long-term risk is capital spending that does not earn a return: $130 billion to $145 billion this year, rising, on the promise of AI products that are only now arriving. The second is regulation, in advertising, privacy and child safety, in the US and Europe. The third is platform dependence: Meta's apps and assistant reach people through phones and stores owned by competitors.
Traderavel VerdictOur straight answer on the company after everything above, not on the trade. Quality, growth, price, risk and the long-term view.
Meta is a high-quality advertising business growing above 20% a year, at a fair valuation, spending heavily to turn itself into an AI company. Growth is high, financial health is strong and company risk is medium, with the capital bill the main concern. Connect has historically been a small event for this stock, and it lands this year straight after an 11.34% day. The card suits traders who want to judge the Muse rally against the keynote before acting, and long-term investors who want the AI story and can accept that it arrives with a very large bill. It does not suit anyone buying the keynote expecting it to repeat Monday's move.
