Upcoming catalystThe event that could move the share price.
The US Food and Drug Administration has a Saturday 17 October 2026 target date for its decision on phentolamine ophthalmic solution 0.75% for presbyopia. The agency accepted the supplemental application in February. The same drug is already approved as Ryzumvi to reverse drug-induced pupil dilation, but presbyopia would be a much larger use. Viatris controls commercial sales and Opus Genetics receives milestones and royalties.
Main stock affectedThe company the event affects most directly.
Opus Genetics, Inc., Nasdaq ticker IRD.
Current priceWhere the shares traded when this write-up was made, and when that was.
$4.76 as of 25 Sept 2026, 20:00 UTC, the regular-session close.
Expected stock reactionWhich way we expect the share price to go after the event. Positive means it rises, Negative means it falls, Mixed means it could go either way.
Positive. This is a supplemental application to add presbyopia to a molecule the FDA has already approved and which is on the market as Ryzumvi. The pivotal data is positive, with 27.2% of treated participants meeting the endpoint against 11.5% on placebo, and the safety profile of the compound is established through the existing indication. An approval of some kind is the likely outcome. The negative case is much the bigger move, at 25% to 40% down on a Complete Response Letter against 8% to 18% up on a clean approval, and it is not being ignored: it is what the risk rating and the figure below are for. A bigger downside is not the same as a likelier one, and a card that names the smaller, likelier side is telling a reader what to expect rather than what to fear. The middle path is the one to watch. A restricted label approves the drug and still shrinks the royalty market, which would read as a disappointment.
Action before the eventWhat we suggest you do before the event. Buy, Watch or Avoid.
Watch. Approval is the likely outcome, but this is a small biotechnology stock facing a binary FDA decision after a 190.24% twelve-month rise. A position should be sized for a loss of one quarter to two fifths on a negative decision.
Why the stock is affectedThe link between the event and this company.
Opus does not sell the drug itself. Viatris holds the commercial rights in most markets, while Opus is eligible for low double-digit to low twenties percentage royalties in the United States and low double-digit royalties elsewhere. Presbyopia affects most adults over 45, so an approval would turn an already approved molecule into a much larger royalty opportunity. A rejection would delay that opportunity and remove an expected source of non-dilutive cash.
Catalyst confidenceHow sure we are that the event happens as described. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
The likely outcome is approval. Confidence that the scheduled event happens and ends in approval: 78%. The molecule is already approved for another eye indication, both pivotal presbyopia trials met their main goals and the company reported no treatment-related serious adverse events. The remaining risk is whether the FDA agrees that the size and durability of the near-vision benefit support the requested label.
Stock-reaction confidenceHow sure we are that the stock reacts the way we expect. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
Moderate. Confidence in the direction: 54%. The approval itself is the likely outcome, but the reaction is harder to call than the decision. The milestone amount for this indication is not public, Viatris controls the launch and the timing of any plan, and the historical sample for how this stock trades a regulatory date is small. A clean approval with no launch detail could produce very little.
When the market will reactThe moment the price is likely to move, such as at the announcement or at the next market open.
The FDA target date is a Saturday. A decision could be announced before the deadline, but if it arrives over the weekend the first full US reaction session will start at 13:30 UTC on Monday 19 October. A press release from Opus or Viatris will be the first reliable confirmation.
Effect on the businessWhat the event changes for the company itself, such as its sales, costs or profit.
High strategic effect, with a smaller immediate accounting effect. Approval would add a common age-related condition to the molecule's label and create a royalty stream if Viatris launches successfully. The wider Viatris agreement has up to $130 million of remaining regulatory and sales milestones, but the companies have not disclosed how much this particular decision would trigger. Opus also receives research reimbursements and existing Ryzumvi royalties, so the first visible benefit may be a milestone rather than a large sales quarter.
Market expectations and forecastWhat investors already expect from this event, and the numbers being forecast.
The evidence leans positive. In the 569-person VEGA-3 study, 27.2% of treated patients gained at least 15 letters of distance-corrected near vision at 12 hours on day eight without losing five distance-vision letters, against 11.5% on placebo. The difference was statistically strong and the study reported no treatment-related serious adverse events. An earlier pivotal study was also positive. My forecast assigns 78% to a clean approval, 14% to an approval with limiting language or a delay that does not end the programme, and 8% to a Complete Response Letter. Commercial success is less certain than regulatory success because Viatris must compete with Vuity, Qlosi, Vizz and Yuvezzi.
How much is already priced inHow much of the expected outcome the share price already reflects before the event happens.
Medium. The shares are up 190.24% over twelve months and sit 21.24% above the 200-day average, which shows that investors already value the broader pipeline and this decision. They are also 21.58% below the 10 September closing high after a separate retinal data rally, so the full approval case is not reflected in the current price.
Expected price move and durationHow far the share price may move because of this event, and how long that move may last.
Options-Implied Move I cannot confirm a reliable figure for this event. October monthly options expire on 16 October, one day before the FDA date. The closest post-event November chain has very little put interest and wide bid and offer spreads, so using it would give false precision. Historical Event Analysis These are close-to-close moves from daily market bars. The sample is useful but limited because two events were development milestones rather than final FDA decisions. Ryzumvi approval, announced before the open on 27 September 2023: the former OCUP shares fell 5.97%, from $4.02 to $3.78, after initially trading higher before the open. VEGA-3 positive pivotal data, announced on 26 June 2025: the shares rose 5.15%, from $0.97 to $1.02. FDA acceptance of the presbyopia application, announced on 25 February 2026: the shares fell 3.85%, from $3.64 to $3.50. Historical Average Move Plus or minus 4.99%, the average absolute move across the three events. The signs were mixed, so the plus or minus symbol is appropriate. A final decision can move the shares more than an application acceptance or a trial update. Our Expected Move Plus 8% to plus 18% on a clean approval with a broad label and credible launch language. Minus 25% to minus 40% on a Complete Response Letter. An approval with restrictive language or an unclear launch plan could trade between minus 8% and plus 5%. Impact Strength High. The event decides whether the company's only approved molecule can enter a common consumer eye-care market. Estimated Duration One to three trading days. Launch details and any disclosed milestone could extend the move. The three figures answer different questions. No dependable options figure is available, the historical figure records three earlier events, and the expected range is my event-specific forecast.
What else lands that dayOther news and events on the same day that could push the price around, and whether they help this trade, bury it, or work against it.
The FDA date is on a weekend. The Monday 19 October reaction session has no major scheduled US Bureau of Labor Statistics release and no other confirmed Opus event. Ordinary biotechnology sentiment and broad market moves still matter, but company-specific news should dominate the open.
Result needed for a big moveWhat the outcome has to be for the stock to move a lot instead of a little.
For a strong rise, Opus needs clean approval, a broad presbyopia label, no unexpected safety restriction and a clear Viatris launch path. Approval alone may not hold a double-digit gain if the launch is distant or the milestone is small.
Possible outcomesThe main ways the event could turn out, with the expected stock reaction for each one.
Positive outcome, 78% probability. Clean approval with a usable label and near-term launch language. Expected reaction: up 8% to 18%. Middle outcome, 14% probability. Approval with limiting language, a delayed announcement or an unclear commercial timeline. Expected reaction: down 8% to up 5%. Negative outcome, 8% probability. A Complete Response Letter that requires more work or data. Expected reaction: down 25% to 40%.
Other affected stocksOther companies that could move on the same news, such as suppliers and competitors.
Viatris, ticker VTRS, owns the commercial rights and is the direct positive read-through. LENZ Therapeutics, ticker LENZ, sells Vizz and is a direct presbyopia competitor. AbbVie, ticker ABBV, sells Vuity and has smaller competitive exposure.
What the market may be missingSomething we think investors have overlooked or read wrong.
Approval does not give Opus a full product revenue stream. Viatris controls pricing, launch timing and promotion, while Opus receives a royalty and possible milestone. The addressable population is large, but current presbyopia drops compete on onset, duration, redness, headaches and repeat use. The regulatory win and the commercial win are separate events.
Main risksWhat could go wrong, and what would prove this call wrong.
The first risk is a Complete Response Letter or narrower label. The second is tolerability. The current Ryzumvi label lists ocular discomfort, conjunctival redness and taste disturbance among common adverse reactions. The third is competition from several marketed drops. The fourth is financing risk: the business is loss-making, burns cash and has issued more shares. The fifth is concentration, because a few specialist funds own large positions and short interest is elevated by available third-party estimates.
Other factorsAnything else worth knowing that the sections above do not cover.
Opus had $88.81 million of cash and $34.93 million of debt at 30 June 2026. Management expects cash plus potential future loan funding to support operations into 2029, but only the currently funded cash is certain. The company is also advancing LCA5, RDH12, BEST1 and MERTK gene-therapy programmes, which means IRD is not a one-asset company even though this decision is its nearest binary catalyst.
Trend over 6 to 12 monthsWhich way the share price has been heading over the past year, and how far it has travelled.
Strong but volatile. The shares are up 190.24% over twelve months, 5.31% over six months and 19.00% over three months. The 52-week intraday range is $1.50 on 30 September 2025 to $7.07 on 9 September 2026. The current price is 58.5% of the way from the low to the high, 32.67% below the high and 217.33% above the low.
Recent price actionWhat the shares have done over the last few weeks and sessions, and on what kind of volume.
The stock jumped 32.03% on 9 September, from $4.34 to $5.73, on positive BEST1 programme data and traded as high as $7.07 on 54.32 million shares. It closed at $6.07 the next day, then fell to $4.76 by 25 September, a 21.58% pullback. The last month is still up 25.26%.
Market structureThe shape of the chart. Rising highs and rising lows mean an uptrend, falling ones mean a downtrend, and neither means the price is stuck in a range.
The long-term structure is higher, with price above rising 50-day and 200-day averages. The short-term structure is weaker because the post-data spike produced lower highs and lower closes. This is a bullish larger trend in a sharp consolidation.
Support and resistance zonesPrice areas where buyers have stepped in before, and price areas where sellers have. They often slow the price down when it gets there again.
First support is $4.60 to $4.70, tested in the lows of 23, 24 and 25 September. The next support is the 50-day average near $4.17. First resistance is $5.15 to $5.30, where the shares traded repeatedly from 17 to 22 September. The next resistance is $5.95 to $6.10, around the closes of 10, 11 and 14 September. The spike high at $7.07 is major resistance.
50-day and 200-day moving averagesThe average closing price over the last 50 days and the last 200 days. Where the price sits against them shows whether the recent trend is strong or fading.
A moving average is the average closing price over that many sessions and helps separate the main trend from daily noise. The 50-day average is $4.17 and the 200-day average is $3.93. Price is 14.28% above the 50-day and 21.24% above the 200-day. The 50-day sits $0.24 above the 200-day. Both averages are rising, but there was no fresh crossover during this rally.
Relative strengthHow this stock has performed against the wider market and against its own sector over the same period.
IRD gained 25.26% in one month, 19.00% in three months, 5.31% in six months and 190.24% in twelve months. Against the S&P 500 tracking fund, it leads by 24.57 percentage points over one month, 13.19 over three months and 173.56 over twelve months, but trails by 14.26 over six months. Against the SPDR S&P Biotech fund, it leads by 33.19 percentage points over one month, 19.23 over three months and 131.14 over twelve months, but trails by 19.82 over six months. The recent relative strength is excellent, while the six-month comparison shows that the path was uneven.
Volume trendHow many shares are changing hands lately compared with normal. Heavy volume behind a move means more traders agree with it.
Rising. Average volume over 20 sessions is 5.25 million shares against 2.61 million over 50 sessions, about 100.75% higher. Much of that difference comes from the 9 September data spike, so it shows active event trading rather than steady accumulation.
VolatilityHow much the share price swings day to day right now, compared with how much it usually swings.
The 14-day average true range is $0.59, or 12.45% of the price. The average high-to-low range over 20 sessions is $0.48, or 10.03%. Annualised realised volatility is 132.89% over 14 sessions against 94.54% over 50 sessions. The stock is trading much more wildly than its recent norm.
Long-Term Technical ViewThe wider chart over years. The big trend, the major price levels and how much the stock swings.
Long-term support is the 200-day average near $3.93, then the 52-week low at $1.50. Long-term resistance is the September closing high near $6.07, then the intraday high at $7.07. A sustained move through $7.07 would confirm a new high. A break below the 200-day average would damage the long-term uptrend.
Technical biasWhat the chart alone suggests, ignoring the news. Rated Bullish, Neutral or Bearish.
Bullish. The price is above both rising averages, relative performance is strong and volume expanded on the September rally. The caution is the 21.58% pullback from the 10 September close and very high volatility. The bullish chart and mixed event call describe different risks. The chart is rising, while the FDA decision still has a large negative branch.
What would invalidate this biasThe price level or chart change that would prove the technical read wrong.
A daily close below the 50-day average at $4.17 would turn the bias neutral. A close below the 200-day average at $3.93 would turn it bearish.

Stock OverviewThe basic numbers. Price, size of the company, sector, the past year of highs and lows, trading volume and the next earnings date.
Using 82.65 million shares reported at 30 June and the current price gives an approximate market value of $393 million. Opus Genetics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company in the healthcare sector. The 52-week range is $1.50 to $7.07. Recent 20-day average volume is 5.25 million shares. The presbyopia decision is due on 17 October, followed by more gene-therapy programme starts and data in late 2026 and 2027.
What the company doesThe business in plain words. What it sells, who buys it, and how the money reaches the company.
Opus develops treatments for inherited retinal diseases and other eye conditions. Its internal pipeline uses gene therapy for disorders including LCA5, RDH12, BEST1 and MERTK. Its approved small-molecule asset, Ryzumvi, and the presbyopia application are commercialised by Viatris under licence.
Revenue BreakdownWhere the money comes from, split by product, by part of the business and by country.
Nearly all reported revenue is licence and collaboration revenue, not product sales made by Opus. Revenue was $0.76 million in the June 2026 quarter, down from $2.88 million a year earlier. The company records Viatris reimbursements, milestones and royalties when earned, which makes quarterly revenue uneven. It does not provide a stable product or geographic revenue split.
Company GrowthHow sales, profit, earnings per share and spare cash have changed over the last few years.
Revenue was $39.85 million in 2022, $19.05 million in 2023, $10.99 million in 2024, $14.20 million in 2025 and $9.86 million over the latest twelve months. The large 2022 base included collaboration payments, so this is not a normal sales growth curve. Latest twelve-month revenue is down 36.09% from the comparable period. Current company growth is Low, while pipeline growth potential is high if approvals and trials succeed.
Earnings PerformanceThe latest results, whether they beat or missed what the market expected, and what the company says comes next.
The company has reported losses in each of the latest four quarters. In the June 2026 quarter, the adjusted comparison was a loss of $0.14 a share against an expected loss of $0.16, while revenue of $0.76 million missed the $2.66 million estimate. The March 2026 and December 2025 quarters missed earnings estimates, while December revenue beat. The pattern is mixed and less useful than cash burn because collaboration revenue arrives irregularly.
Financial HealthCash, debt, cash flow and profit margins, and whether the company keeps issuing new shares. Rated Strong, Average or Weak.
At 30 June, cash was $88.81 million, total debt was about $34.93 million and net cash was about $53.88 million. The latest twelve-month free cash outflow was about $40.67 million. Reported shares increased 18.25% from the end of 2025 to 30 June 2026. Cash runway is useful, but continued losses, debt and dilution make financial health Average.
ValuationWhat you pay today for what the company earns, next to its rivals and its own past. Rated Cheap, Fair or Expensive.
At roughly $393 million of market value and $9.86 million of latest twelve-month revenue, price to sales is about 39.9. Earnings, free cash flow and EBITDA are negative, so price to earnings and enterprise value to EBITDA are not meaningful. The valuation is Expensive on current revenue and rests on future royalties and gene-therapy success.
ShareholdersWho owns the company. Big funds, company insiders, and whether ownership sits with only a few holders.
The March 2026 proxy listed Perceptive Advisors and Nantahala Capital at 9.99% each, the Foundation Fighting Blindness Retinal Degeneration Fund at 7.7%, Balyasny at 7.2% and Bios Partners at 5.2%. Later share and warrant activity means those percentages are not current. The filing shows that ownership is concentrated in specialist funds, while a dependable current total institutional percentage is not available from the primary filings.
Insider ActivityWhether the people running the company have been buying or selling their own shares lately.
On 9 September the chief executive exercised 392,157 warrants at $1.15 and retained a net 316,616 shares after withholding shares for the exercise cost. On 8 September director Cam Gallagher exercised 784,314 warrants at $1.15, with the resulting shares subject to a 180-day lock-up. On 3 September the chief financial officer sold 28,000 shares at a weighted average $4.5433, partly for taxes and partly under a trading plan adopted on 30 April. These mixed transactions do not give a clean open-market buying signal.
Dividends and BuybacksCash paid out to shareholders, whether that payment looks safe, and whether the company is buying back its own shares.
Opus pays no dividend and has no material recurring buyback. Cash is being used for research, trials and operations.
Competitive PositionWho the company competes with, how much of the market it holds, and what it has that rivals do not.
The presbyopia asset uses phentolamine, a molecule with an existing FDA-approved eye indication and a 12-hour near-vision result in the pivotal study. Viatris supplies commercial scale. The weakness is that Opus gives up direct control and shares economics through royalties. The market already includes AbbVie's Vuity, Orasis's Qlosi, LENZ's Vizz and Tenpoint's Yuvezzi, so convenience, duration and tolerability will decide share.
Future OutlookWhat sales and profit are expected to do next, and what management has promised.
My company outlook is Positive but speculative. A presbyopia approval could add milestones and royalties, while management expects the current plan to be funded into 2029 with available cash and potential loan tranches. Several internal gene-therapy programmes can create additional value. The offset is high research spending, no stable product revenue and repeated dilution risk.
Other Upcoming Company CatalystsOther events ahead that could move the share price, such as results, launches or approvals, apart from the catalyst this report is built on.
Management plans first patient dosing in the LCA5 pivotal trial and initiation of the RDH12 clinical programme in the fourth quarter of 2026. It targets a BEST1 pivotal start and MERTK clinical start in the first quarter of 2027, with several programme readouts during 2027. Exact dates have not been announced.
Long-Term Company RisksWhat could weaken the business over the coming years, rather than around this one event.
Clinical failure is the largest risk across the gene-therapy pipeline. Commercial uptake of the Viatris products may be weak even after approval. Manufacturing or regulatory delays can consume cash. Debt adds fixed obligations, and more share issuance can dilute each investor's ownership. Concentrated holders and high volatility can make exits difficult during bad news.
Traderavel VerdictOur straight answer on the company after everything above, not on the trade. Quality, growth, price, risk and the long-term view.
Opus is an average-quality, early commercial biotechnology company with low current revenue growth, average financial health, an expensive valuation and high company risk. Its outlook is positive because the licensed eye-drop asset and four gene-therapy programmes create several ways to win. For this event, Watch. Clean approval is more likely than rejection, but the upside is partly expected and the negative branch is much larger. The card is best suited to speculative biotechnology investors who can tolerate binary risk, high volatility and possible dilution. It is not suited to conservative investors or anyone unable to absorb a 25% to 40% event loss.
