Upcoming catalystThe event that could move the share price.
IonQ Investor Day 2026 starts on September 8, 2026 at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time, or 16:30 UTC. Management is expected to explain the combined IonQ and SkyWater strategy, technology roadmap, commercial targets and financial framework.
Main stock affectedThe company the event affects most directly.
IONQ, IonQ, Inc.
Current priceWhere the shares traded when this write-up was made, and when that was.
$44.86 as of 21 Aug 2026, 20:00 UTC, the regular-session close
Expected stock reactionWhich way we expect the share price to go after the event. Positive means it rises, Negative means it falls, Mixed means it could go either way.
Positive. My base case is that management provides enough commercial, integration and technology detail to strengthen confidence in the long-term growth story. The high valuation limits the likely upside unless new targets exceed current expectations.
Action before the eventWhat we suggest you do before the event. Buy, Watch or Avoid.
Watch. Do not chase expensive options before the event. The September 11 options market was already pricing a move near 15%. My preferred trade is to buy only after a confirmed close above $48 with strong volume, or after a controlled pullback that holds $42. Avoid oversized positions.
Why the stock is affectedThe link between the event and this company.
IonQ recently completed its SkyWater acquisition, but current 2026 guidance excludes SkyWater. The Investor Day may give investors their first detailed view of combined revenue, margins, capital spending, integration costs and technology milestones. Better-than-expected targets would support a higher valuation. Vague targets, rising losses or roadmap delays would weaken confidence and compress the stock's high sales multiple.
Catalyst confidenceHow sure we are that the event happens as described. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
The event is officially scheduled. I expect it to occur as planned and focus on the combined-company strategy. Confidence: 99%.
Stock-reaction confidenceHow sure we are that the stock reacts the way we expect. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
I expect a positive reaction, but the stock is volatile and expectations are elevated. Confidence: 68%.
When the market will reactThe moment the price is likely to move, such as at the announcement or at the next market open.
The first reaction should begin during the presentation from 16:30 UTC on September 8. The most important window is the final two hours of the regular session, followed by September 9 and September 10 as analysts update forecasts.
Effect on the businessWhat the event changes for the company itself, such as its sales, costs or profit.
Clear combined-company targets could improve revenue visibility and support customer confidence. SkyWater gives IonQ domestic semiconductor manufacturing, advanced packaging and foundry capabilities. The trade-off is lower consolidated margins, higher capital spending and more integration risk than IonQ had as a smaller quantum-focused company.
Market expectations and forecastWhat investors already expect from this event, and the numbers being forecast.
The market expects details on SkyWater integration, consolidated guidance, gross margins, the 256-qubit system, error correction, government contracts and the route toward commercial quantum advantage. I cannot confirm a published consensus for combined revenue or margin targets. My forecast is that management presents a stronger long-term revenue framework and confirms progress toward its hardware roadmap, but stops short of promising near-term profitability. A credible combined outlook could produce a 7% to 12% gain. A presentation built mostly around distant technology goals could cause a 6% to 10% decline. Recent price action and priced-in level Priced-in level: medium. IONQ rose from $34.68 on July 22 to $44.86 on August 21, a 29.4% gain. It also rose 8.0% in the final session reviewed. The latest 19.71 million share volume was below its roughly 21.43 million 50-day average, so the latest advance did not show unusually heavy participation. Quantum peers QBTS, RGTI and QUBT also gained 8.4%, 11.4% and 9.5% respectively on August 21, showing that part of the move was sector-wide.
Expected price move and durationHow far the share price may move because of this event, and how long that move may last.
Options-Implied Move ±15.28% using the September 11, 2026 expiration and the latest reliable event-week estimate available. The ± figure prices the size of the possible move, not its direction. The options market is not taking the positive side of this analysis. Historical Event Analysis September 12, 2025 Analyst Day: IONQ closed at $55.61, up 18.19% from the September 11 close of $47.05. It gained another 6.29% on September 15 and reached $59.11. Event-day volume was 68.82 million shares versus 21.60 million on the previous day. The reaction window was one to two trading days. Historical Average Move +18.19%, based on one directly comparable Investor Day. Calculation: one event-day move of +18.19% divided by one event. The sample is limited and should not be treated as a stable average. Our Expected Move +7% to +12%. This is below the +18.19% historical example and below the ±15.28% options-implied move. The 2025 event produced unusually strong volume and occurred during a powerful sector rally. The 2026 stock already carries higher expectations, while integration costs and valuation create resistance. Impact Strength High. This is the first major strategy presentation after the SkyWater acquisition and could reset multi-year revenue, margin and technology assumptions. Estimated Duration 1-3 trading days. A normal reaction should fade or consolidate within several sessions. A detailed financial framework or accelerated roadmap could create a longer repricing lasting several weeks.
Result needed for a big moveWhat the outcome has to be for the stock to move a lot instead of a little.
IONQ likely needs at least two of the following for a gain above 12%: combined revenue targets materially above existing standalone expectations, a clear path to improving cash efficiency, confirmed 256-qubit progress, faster error-correction milestones, large named contracts, or measurable SkyWater cost and development synergies.
Possible outcomesThe main ways the event could turn out, with the expected stock reaction for each one.
Positive scenario: Management gives strong combined guidance, confirms major roadmap progress and provides credible contract visibility. Expected reaction: +10% to +18%. Neutral scenario: Management confirms existing plans but gives limited new financial detail. Expected reaction: -3% to +4% as elevated options premiums unwind. Negative scenario: Integration costs rise, margins weaken, timelines move out or management avoids measurable targets. Expected reaction: -10% to -18%.
Other affected stocksOther companies that could move on the same news, such as suppliers and competitors.
QBTS, RGTI and QUBT could move with quantum-sector sentiment. AMZN, MSFT and GOOGL provide cloud access to quantum systems, but the event is unlikely to materially affect their valuations. Government and semiconductor positioning may also create a smaller sentiment effect for INTC and GFS.
What the market may be missingSomething we think investors have overlooked or read wrong.
SkyWater may reduce IonQ's dependence on outside manufacturing and shorten hardware development cycles. That strategic benefit may matter more than near-term foundry margins. The overlooked risk is that SkyWater changes IonQ's financial profile. Revenue may become larger but less software-like, more capital-intensive and lower margin.
What else lands that dayOther news and events on the same day that could push the price around, and whether they help this trade, bury it, or work against it.
8 September 2026 is the first session after the Labor Day weekend and carries almost nothing on the US macro calendar. The only scheduled item is the New York Fed survey of consumer expectations at 15:00 UTC, which does not move markets. The investor day begins at 16:30 UTC, in the middle of the afternoon session, with no data release, no Federal Reserve event and no larger technology company scheduled against it. The rest of the week is heavier: producer prices arrive at 12:30 UTC on 10 September and consumer prices at 12:30 UTC on 11 September, and a company valued on long-dated growth reprices on both. Net effect: the day itself is as clear as this calendar gets, and the window in which the market digests combined-company guidance is not. What to expect on the day. The presentation gets the market's full attention, so the reaction should be a genuine read on what is said rather than something you have to strip an index move out of. Be careful with the first session back from a long weekend, because volume is uneven and a quantum computing stock is volatile enough without a thin book underneath it. The follow-through then runs into two inflation prints, which for a company of this kind matter more than they would for a profitable business.
Main risksWhat could go wrong, and what would prove this call wrong.
Overall risk level: high. The main risks are rich valuation, expensive options, acquisition integration, technical delays, government contract timing, dilution, high cash burn and competition from better-funded private and public rivals. A broad technology selloff could overwhelm company-specific news.
Other factorsAnything else worth knowing that the sections above do not cover.
Short interest was reported near 13% of float in August. A strong presentation could trigger covering and amplify an upside move. The reverse is also true. A disappointing event could attract fresh short selling.
Trend over 6 to 12 monthsWhich way the share price has been heading over the past year, and how far it has travelled.
IONQ gained 20.7% from its August 21, 2025 close of $37.17 to $44.86 on August 21, 2026. The highest closing price in the period was $82.09 on October 13, 2025. The 52-week low was $25.89 on March 30, 2026. The stock has recovered sharply from the March low but remains about 45% below its October closing high.
Market structureThe shape of the chart. Rising highs and rising lows mean an uptrend, falling ones mean a downtrend, and neither means the price is stuck in a range.
The 12-month chart is a wide range rather than a clean uptrend. Price surged above $80 in October 2025, fell below $26 in March 2026, recovered above $60 and then pulled back toward the mid-$40s. In simple terms, buyers have repeatedly appeared below $40, while rallies above $55 have struggled to hold.
Support and resistance zonesPrice areas where buyers have stepped in before, and price areas where sellers have. They often slow the price down when it gets there again.
Immediate support is $42 to $43. This area was tested repeatedly around August 5 to 12 and again on August 20 to 21. A close below $42 would weaken the post-earnings recovery. Secondary support is $39.50 to $40.50, tested around August 5 to 7. A close below $39.50 would expose $35 to $36, the late-July breakout area. Immediate resistance is $46 to $48, tested several times between August 13 and August 18. A close above $48 would confirm a near-term breakout. Higher resistance is $55 to $60. This area was important during the 2025 Analyst Day rally and later 2026 swings. A close above $60 would materially improve the medium-term structure.
50-day and 200-day moving averagesThe average closing price over the last 50 days and the last 200 days. Where the price sits against them shows whether the recent trend is strong or fading.
A moving average is the average closing price over a set number of trading days. The 50-day simple moving average was about $44.78. The 200-day simple moving average was about $44.93. At $44.86, the stock was slightly above the 50-day average and slightly below the 200-day average. Both were close to flat after falling from earlier 2026 highs. The 50-day remained below the 200-day. That bearish arrangement began with a death cross in February 2026 and signals that the longer recovery is not fully confirmed.
Relative strengthHow this stock has performed against the wider market and against its own sector over the same period.
Over the 12 months reviewed, IONQ gained 20.7%. SPY gained about 20.5%, from $635.55 to $765.72. IONQ therefore performed roughly in line with the S&P 500. QTUM rose about 64.3%, from $91.60 to $150.47, so IONQ lagged the broader quantum and advanced-technology fund by about 43.6 percentage points. During the latest month, IONQ improved sharply and began leading the sector fund.
Volume trendHow many shares are changing hands lately compared with normal. Heavy volume behind a move means more traders agree with it.
The latest session traded 19.71 million shares. This was about 92% of the 50-day average of 21.43 million shares. Recent volume has been active but lower than the heavy volume seen immediately after earnings. The 8% price gain on below-average volume provides only partial confirmation. A breakout above $48 would be stronger if volume exceeds 25 million shares.
VolatilityHow much the share price swings day to day right now, compared with how much it usually swings.
The 14-day average true range was about $3.01, or 6.7% of the $44.86 share price. Recent 14-day historical volatility was about 77%. This is high volatility. Position sizes should be smaller than normal, and a stop placed only 2% or 3% away could be triggered by ordinary daily movement.
Technical biasWhat the chart alone suggests, ignoring the news. Rated Bullish, Neutral or Bearish.
Neutral. Price is sitting almost exactly between the 50-day and 200-day averages. The stock has strong one-month momentum, but the wider chart remains below major resistance and retains a bearish moving-average arrangement. This neutral chart bias is weaker than my positive catalyst view. For the event trade, I give more weight to the new combined-company information, but only after price confirms the reaction.
What would invalidate this biasThe price level or chart change that would prove the technical read wrong.
A close above $48 on more than 25 million shares would turn the bias bullish and target $55 to $60. A close below $39.50 would turn it bearish and expose $35, followed by the March low near $26.

Stock OverviewThe basic numbers. Price, size of the company, sector, the past year of highs and lows, trading volume and the next earnings date.
IONQ traded at $44.86 with a market value of about $16.49 billion. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and operates in advanced computing and technology hardware. Its 52-week range was $25.89 to $84.64. Recent average daily volume was about 20 million shares. The next earnings date is estimated for November 4, 2026. I cannot confirm that earnings date as company-confirmed.
What the company doesThe business in plain words. What it sells, who buys it, and how the money reaches the company.
IonQ develops quantum computers using trapped ions. It sells quantum hardware, cloud access, consulting, maintenance and support. It has expanded into quantum networking, sensing, security and space-based services. SkyWater adds semiconductor foundry and advanced packaging services. A simple example is that a drug company could rent access to IonQ hardware through a cloud platform instead of buying and operating a quantum computer. Revenue comes from hardware deployments, cloud usage, research contracts, support and longer-term government or commercial agreements.
Revenue BreakdownWhere the money comes from, split by product, by part of the business and by country.
For 2025, quantum hardware produced $69.95 million, or 53.8% of total revenue. Platform, consulting and support produced $60.07 million, or 46.2%. By customer location, the United States produced $86.96 million, or 66.9%. Switzerland produced $16.63 million, or 12.8%. Other international customers produced $26.43 million, or 20.3%. In Q2 2026, approximately 50% of revenue was international, 60% was commercial and 25% came from customers buying more than one type of product. These categories overlap and should not be added together. The business remains most dependent on hardware deployments and large contracts, which can make quarterly revenue uneven.
Company GrowthHow sales, profit, earnings per share and spare cash have changed over the last few years.
Revenue was $22.04 million in 2023, $43.07 million in 2024 and $130.02 million in 2025. Growth was 95.4% in 2024 and 201.8% in 2025. Net loss was approximately $158 million in 2023, $332 million in 2024 and $510 million in 2025. Diluted EPS was approximately -$0.78, -$1.56 and -$1.82 respectively. Operating cash flow was -$78.81 million in 2023, -$105.68 million in 2024 and -$283.19 million in 2025. Calculated free cash flow was about -$123.7 million in 2024 and -$299.6 million in 2025, using operating cash flow minus reported property and equipment additions. I cannot confirm comparable 2023 capital spending from the reviewed figures. Revenue is accelerating fastest. Profit and free cash flow are moving in the wrong direction because research, acquisitions and commercial expansion are growing faster than revenue.
Earnings PerformanceThe latest results, whether they beat or missed what the market expected, and what the company says comes next.
Q2 2026 revenue was $80.1 million, up 287% year over year and 20% above the midpoint of company guidance. Adjusted EPS was -$0.33. GAAP EPS was -$5.08, largely affected by non-cash and acquisition-related items. Q1 2026 revenue was approximately $64.7 million, up about 755% year over year. Management raised full-year revenue guidance after both Q1 and Q2. Q2 2025 revenue was $20.69 million. The pattern is strong revenue execution with continuing adjusted operating losses. I cannot confirm reliable analyst EPS consensus figures for each quarter.
Financial HealthCash, debt, cash flow and profit margins, and whether the company keeps issuing new shares. Rated Strong, Average or Weak.
Cash, cash equivalents and investments were approximately $3.0 billion on June 30, 2026. Management estimated about $2.0 billion after the cash used for SkyWater. That provides substantial funding capacity despite negative cash flow. I cannot confirm post-acquisition total debt or net debt because a full combined balance sheet was not yet available in the reviewed disclosures. The 2025 gross margin was about 40.4%, down from about 52.2% in 2024. The 2025 operating margin was deeply negative as research and acquisition spending expanded. The share count has risen materially through equity offerings, employee compensation and acquisitions. Public filings indicated roughly 296.8 million shares in July 2025 and a substantially larger base during 2026. Exact post-SkyWater outstanding shares cannot yet be confirmed. IonQ could survive a bad year without immediately raising money, but continued acquisitions and high cash burn could reduce that cushion.
ValuationWhat you pay today for what the company earns, next to its rivals and its own past. Rated Cheap, Fair or Expensive.
Traditional valuation measures are not useful. P/E and forward P/E are not meaningful because earnings are negative. PEG is not meaningful. EV to EBITDA is not meaningful because EBITDA is negative. At a $16.49 billion market value and the $285 million midpoint of 2026 standalone revenue guidance, the stock trades near 57.9 times expected sales. Calculation: $16.49 billion divided by $0.285 billion equals 57.9. These valuation numbers tell you how much you pay today for each dollar the company earns or sells. IONQ is expensive. It trades on future quantum leadership rather than current profits. The valuation leaves little room for delays or weaker growth.
ShareholdersWho owns the company. Big funds, company insiders, and whether ownership sits with only a few holders.
BlackRock reported about 29.87 million shares, near 8.05% of the pre-SkyWater share base in March 2026. Vanguard-related entities and Morgan Stanley were also major holders. Ownership percentages vary between filings because IonQ issued shares and completed acquisitions during 2026. I cannot confirm one fully updated post-acquisition ownership table. Institutional ownership is broad rather than controlled by one holder, but large index and growth funds can still create sharp flows.
Insider ActivityWhether the people running the company have been buying or selling their own shares lately.
Recent filings show repeated insider sales, tax-withholding transactions and planned Form 144 sales. Director John Raymond sold 3,815 shares at about $55.01 on June 18, 2026 under a Rule 10b5-1 plan. Scheduled selling is less informative than an unscheduled open-market sale. The recent pattern is selling and tax-related activity rather than a clear cluster of discretionary purchases.
Dividends and BuybacksCash paid out to shareholders, whether that payment looks safe, and whether the company is buying back its own shares.
IonQ pays no dividend. No material active share-buyback programme was confirmed. Retaining cash is normal for a company funding research, acquisitions and rapid expansion.
Competitive PositionWho the company competes with, how much of the market it holds, and what it has that rivals do not.
Competitors include IBM, Google, Quantinuum, Rigetti, D-Wave and other private quantum developers. IonQ's main distinction is its trapped-ion architecture combined with cloud distribution, networking, sensing, security and domestic foundry capabilities. SkyWater may improve supply-chain control and manufacturing speed. IonQ also reported 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity in 2025. No reliable, directly comparable market-share figure is published. The advantage is promising but not yet proven durable because competitors use different performance measures and continue investing heavily.
Future OutlookWhat sales and profit are expected to do next, and what management has promised.
Management guides to $280 million to $290 million of 2026 standalone revenue, representing about 119% growth at the midpoint from 2025. The guidance excludes SkyWater. Public analyst estimates reviewed were near $388 million for 2027 and $633 million for 2028, but estimates may change after Investor Day. Management expects strong organic growth but has not provided a near-term profitability target in the reviewed guidance. My view is that revenue growth can remain high, while margins and free cash flow will stay pressured by integration, manufacturing and research costs. Upcoming Catalysts September 8, 2026: Investor Day, confirmed for 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time. September 23 to 25, 2026: Quantum World Congress participation. November 4, 2026: Next earnings date, estimated and not company-confirmed. Late 2026: Possible updates on the 256-qubit system, error correction, SkyWater integration and government contracts. No exact dates are confirmed for these technology updates.
Main risksWhat could go wrong, and what would prove this call wrong.
The largest business risk is execution. IonQ must turn rapid contract and acquisition growth into repeatable revenue without allowing costs and share dilution to rise faster. Other risks include technology delays, competing quantum architectures, dependence on government spending, uneven contract timing, SkyWater integration, lower foundry margins, capital spending, stock-based compensation and a valuation that assumes many years of high growth. The risk that worries me most is a gap between technical milestones and commercial cash generation. Revenue can rise while shareholder value falls if losses, dilution and capital requirements rise faster.
Long-Term Technical ViewThe wider chart over years. The big trend, the major price levels and how much the stock swings.
The multi-year trend remains positive compared with the 2022 and 2023 base, but the stock is far below its October 2025 peak. Long-term support sits around $25 to $30. Major resistance is $60, followed by $75 to $85. Price is near both its 50-day and 200-day averages, so the long-term trend is undecided. Volatility remains high.
Traderavel VerdictOur straight answer on the company after everything above, not on the trade. Quality, growth, price, risk and the long-term view.
IonQ is an average-quality business with high growth, strong liquidity and high long-term business risk. Its technology position and government relevance support a positive long-term outlook, but its valuation is expensive and its losses remain large. It suits speculative growth investors who can tolerate sharp volatility and multi-year uncertainty. It does not suit income investors, conservative portfolios or traders who cannot absorb double-digit event moves. The better trade is to demand proof from the Investor Day and buy strength above $48 rather than paying high pre-event option premiums.
