Upcoming catalystThe event that could move the exchange rate.
Eurostat publishes the flash estimate of euro area inflation for September. Inflation was 3.2% in August, the European Central Bank raised for the second time this year on 10 September, and the market is pricing more. This is the first inflation reading since that decision and the most important one before the next meeting on 29 October.
Event date and timeWhen the event is expected. Shown in your own time zone, or in UTC if you switch the clock at the top of the page. If the exact hour is not confirmed, you only see the date.
Friday 2 October 2026, 11:00 Central European time, which is 09:00 UTC.
Main currency pair affected
The euro against the United States dollar, EURUSD. The euro side of this pair is currently set by how far the European Central Bank is expected to go, and that is exactly what this reading changes.
Current priceWhere the exchange rate stood when this write-up was made, and when that was.
1.14633 as of 21 Sept 2026, 23:59 UTC
Expected directionWhich way we expect the token price to go after the event. Positive means it rises, Negative means it falls, Mixed means it could go either way.
Positive, and the evidence behind it has firmed. A hot reading is the likelier of the two outcomes. August's 3.3% was driven by an energy component running at its fastest since January 2023, crude has not eased since, and Spain's September flash on 29 September 2026 came in at 4.9% against 4.6% expected, with the harmonised measure at 5.0% and core up to 3.1%. That points to a September headline at or above August's rather than the fall back toward 3.0% that the soft case needs. The pair is the other half of the call. It closed on the floor of its 30 day range with momentum stretched to the downside, so the soft outcome is already most of the way into the price while the hot one has very little standing in front of it. That is an uneven payoff sitting on top of an uneven probability, which is why this is a direction rather than a shrug. The doubt belongs in the confidence figure below, and there is a lot of it. The United States publishes its September employment report three and a half hours later.
Action before the eventWhat we suggest you do before the event. Buy, Watch or Avoid.
Watch. The pair closed on its lowest level of the last 30 days with an RSI of 30.96, which is stretched to the downside, but a stretched chart is not a reason to buy ahead of a figure that could confirm the move.
Why it mattersHow the event reaches the price. Through demand, supply, how much the network is used, fees, or the rules the token trades under.
The European Central Bank raised its deposit rate by a quarter point to 2.50% on 10 September 2026, unanimously, after raising to 2.25% on 11 June. President Christine Lagarde called the move a no brainer, said the risks to inflation were to the upside, and made no commitment on what comes next. The market has priced a peak around 3.00% in 2027. That path depends on inflation staying above 3%, and this is the first reading that tests it.
Catalyst confidenceHow sure we are that the event happens as described. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
Confidence that the flash estimate is published on 2 October at 11:00 Central European time is 98 out of 100. Eurostat has confirmed the date, and its euro indicators are released at that hour.
Price-reaction confidenceHow sure we are that the pair moves the way we expect. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
Confidence that the pair moves in the direction described is 46 out of 100, the lowest figure on any of these cards and deliberately so. What supports the call: the inflation reading has a likelier side, and the pair is positioned for the other one. What holds it below even: the United States publishes its September employment report three and a half hours after this release, and that report routinely moves this pair more than any euro area figure. A euro area beat followed by a strong American payrolls number ends the day lower even though the morning was right. Read this as a view on the 09:00 reaction rather than on the close.
Expected moveHow far we think the price moves, and how long the move may last.
Our Expected Move +20 to +45 pips, which is +0.17% to +0.39%, if headline inflation reaches 3.4% or core inflation rises back above 2.5%, and -15 to -35 pips, which is -0.13% to -0.31%, if headline inflation falls back toward 3.0% with core flat. A pip is the fourth decimal place, so 20 pips is a move of 0.0020. The upside range is larger because the pair is oversold at its low, which gives a positive surprise more room than a negative one. Impact Medium. The average daily move is 0.139%, so the upside range is 1.2 to 2.8 times an ordinary day and the downside range is 0.9 to 2.2 times one. Calculated as 0.17 divided by 0.139, 0.39 divided by 0.139, 0.13 divided by 0.139 and 0.31 divided by 0.139. This is a quiet pair, so a modest move is a large day. Estimated Duration Within hours for the euro reading itself, because the United States employment report the same afternoon resets the pair. A shift in the pricing of the 29 October meeting would last until that meeting.
What exactly is happeningThe event itself in full. Who is involved, what changes, and the amounts and conditions that matter.
Eurostat's flash estimate gives the headline rate and the main components for September. In August, confirmed on 17 September, annual inflation was 3.2%, up from 2.9% in July, with a monthly rise of 0.4%. The flash estimate had said 3.3%. Services contributed 1.43 points to the annual rate, energy 1.29 points, non-energy industrial goods 0.30 points and food, alcohol and tobacco 0.22 points. Energy prices were up 14.3% on the year. Core inflation, which excludes energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, dipped to 2.4% from 2.5%. The European Central Bank's September projections put inflation at 3.0% for 2026 as a whole and 2.1% for 2028, with a peak late this year as the energy shock from the Iran war passes through. Lagarde said wages had not shown a material response to the shock, with the Bank's tracker pointing to 2.7% negotiated wage growth in the first half of 2027.
Market expectationsWhat most traders currently expect to happen. Bullish means they expect a rise, Bearish a fall, Neutral neither.
Neutral. The Bank expects inflation to peak late in 2026, so a September figure at or slightly above August's is the central expectation. A consensus figure for the flash estimate could not be confirmed for this card. The market's attention is split between the headline, which carries the energy shock, and core, which carries the question of whether it is spreading.
How much is already priced inHow much of the expected outcome the exchange rate already reflects before the event happens.
Medium. The September rise is done, and the market has priced a peak around 3.00% in 2027, so a steady reading near 3.2% is priced. What is not priced is either a clear peak, which would bring the end of the cycle forward, or a rise in core, which would make a third move on 29 October likely.
What else lands that dayOther news and events on the same day that could push the price around, and whether they help this trade, bury it, or work against it.
The day is conflicting for this pair. The United States publishes its September employment report at 08:30 New York time, 12:30 UTC, three and a half hours after the euro figure, on its usual first Friday schedule. With the Federal Reserve having just raised, that report can move EURUSD by several times the reaction to the euro reading, in either direction. What to expect on the day. Expect the euro move in the European morning and a second, likely larger, dollar move after lunch in London. Read core inflation first, because the headline mostly repeats what energy prices already showed. Then do not assume the morning move survives the afternoon: attribute only the move between 09:00 and 12:30 UTC to this card's event.
Bullish scenarioWhat would have to happen for the price to rise, and why the market would read it that way.
Headline inflation reaches 3.4% or more and core rises back above 2.5%, with services carrying more of the increase. The market prices a third rise for 29 October with more conviction, the gap to the Federal Reserve narrows in expectation, and the pair bounces off its 30 day low toward the 100 day average at 1.1519963.
Neutral scenarioThe outcome that simply meets expectations and moves the price very little.
Headline inflation lands between 3.1% and 3.3% and core is unchanged at 2.4%. The euro barely moves and the pair spends the day waiting for the United States employment report. This is the most likely single outcome.
Bearish scenarioWhat would have to happen for the price to fall. A delay, a disappointment, or supply nobody expected.
Headline inflation falls back toward 3.0% as energy prices ease, and core is flat or lower. The case for a third rise weakens, the gap to the Federal Reserve looks set to stay wide, and the pair breaks below its 30 day low toward the 90 day low at 1.13534.
Result needed for a big moveWhat the outcome has to be for the pair to move a lot instead of a little.
A move in core inflation. The headline is largely an energy story that the Bank has said it will look through at the margin. A rise in core would say the shock is spreading into services and goods, which is the condition for the Bank to keep going. Nothing else in the release can move the pair beyond the ranges above.
Other currency pairs affected
EURGBP and EURJPY carry the euro side without the dollar, and EURGBP is the cleaner test of the European Central Bank against another central bank that is also tightening. EURCHF moves on the same reading against a central bank at zero. This card names the dollar pair because it is where the euro trades deepest.
Main risksWhat could go wrong, and what would prove this call wrong.
High. The United States employment report the same afternoon is the largest risk, because it can erase the euro move entirely. The flash estimate is also frequently revised, as August's was from 3.3% to 3.2%. And energy prices driven by the Middle East can move within the day, changing how the market reads a headline that is mostly energy.
What the market may be missingSomething we think investors have overlooked or read wrong.
The composition of August's rise. Services contributed 1.43 points to the annual rate, more than energy's 1.29. A market focused on the energy shock may be underweighting that services are the larger part of euro area inflation, and services do not come down when oil does. If September shows services holding up while energy eases, the headline could fall and the Bank could still have reason to raise, which is a combination that a quick read of the headline would get wrong. The second point is the chart. The pair has fallen for a week into its 30 day low on dollar strength, which leaves it oversold and positioned for more euro weakness. A reading that merely avoids disappointing could be enough for a bounce.
TrendWhether the price is above or below its own 50-day and 200-day averages. Above both is an uptrend, below both is a downtrend.
Bearish. Over seven days EURUSD is down 1.12%, with closes between 1.14633 and 1.15477. Over 30 days it is down 1.03%, with closes between 1.14633 and 1.16874. Over 90 days it is down 0.55%, with a low of 1.13534. Over 180 days it is down 2.70%. The one year range runs from 1.13534 to 1.20224. The pair has been sliding since the spring and has accelerated in the week since the Federal Reserve raised.
Market structureThe shape of the chart. Rising highs and rising lows mean an uptrend, falling ones mean a downtrend, and neither means the price is stuck in a range.
Lower highs and a fresh low. Price sits at 0.00 on a scale where 0 is the 30 day low and 100 is the 30 day high, which means the current close is the low. It is 1.95% below the 30 day high. Sellers have control. Picture a pair that traded as high as 1.16874 within the last month and has now closed at its lowest point of it.
Support and resistancePrices where buyers have stepped in before, and prices where sellers have. A price often stalls or turns at these.
Support is the 90 day low at 1.13534, which is also the low of the year. Resistance is the 100 day average at 1.1519963, then the one week high at 1.15477, then the 50 day average at 1.1564482 and the 20 day average at 1.1569015, with the 200 day average at 1.1604386 above. The number of times each level has been tested could not be verified, because the daily feed used here carries closing prices rather than intraday highs and lows.
VolumeWhether trading is picking up or dying down. Rising volume behind a price move means more people agree with it.
Not available. Foreign exchange trades over the counter between banks rather than on one exchange, so there is no consolidated volume figure. The volatility readings below are the closest available measure of participation.
RSI and momentumWhether the price has been rising or falling hard lately, and whether that push is getting stronger or running out.
The 14 day RSI is 30.96. RSI measures how much of the recent movement has been upward, on a scale from 0 to 100, where above 70 is usually called overbought and below 30 oversold. At 30.96 the pair is at the edge of oversold, which says the selling has been one sided and is due a pause, not that it has ended. Divergence between price and momentum could not be verified from the closes available.
Moving averagesThe average price over the last 20, 50, 100 and 200 days. Trading above them is generally a healthy sign, below them a weak one.
A moving average is the average closing price over a set number of days. The 20 day average is 1.1569015, the 50 day average is 1.1564482, the 100 day average is 1.1519963 and the 200 day average is 1.1604386. Price is below all four. The 20 and 50 day averages are flat and nearly equal, which is what the month looked like before this week's fall, and the break below the 100 day average is the move that matters. Exact crossover dates could not be verified from the data collected.
VolatilityHow much this pair swings day to day right now, compared with how much it usually swings.
Normal. Annualised realised volatility over the last 30 days is 5.05%. Over the preceding 30 day window it was 4.69%, before that 5.21%, and three months ago 4.88%. The pair is moving about as much as it usually does. The average daily move is 0.139%, which is 0.00159 at the current rate, or about 16 pips. A stop inside 20 pips sits inside ordinary daily noise.
Breakout and breakdown levels
The breakdown level is a daily close below 1.13534, the low of the year, which would leave the pair with no recent structure beneath it. The recovery level is a daily close back above 1.1519963, the 100 day average, which would say the week's fall was a dollar squeeze rather than a new leg down.
Technical biasWhat the chart alone suggests, ignoring the news. Rated Bullish, Neutral or Bearish.
Bearish. Price is below all four averages and sitting on its 30 day low, and every window from a week to six months is negative. The oversold RSI argues for a pause, not a turn. If the chart and the catalyst disagree I weight the catalyst, because a change in the path of euro rates is what would turn this trend.
What would invalidate this biasThe price level or chart change that would prove the technical read wrong.
A daily close above 1.1519963, the 100 day average, would end the immediate selling. A close above 1.1604386, the 200 day average, would turn the chart bullish.
Interest rate differential
In the dollar's favour. The European Central Bank's deposit rate is 2.50% after the rise on 10 September 2026. The United States target range is 3.75% to 4.00% after the Federal Reserve raised on 16 September. The gap is roughly one and a quarter to one and a half points. The rate advantage sits with the quote currency, the dollar.
Central bank biasWhether the first currency's central bank is leaning toward higher rates, which is hawkish, or lower ones, which is dovish, compared with the second's.
Hawkish on the euro side. The Bank has raised twice since June, unanimously the second time, and said the risks to inflation are to the upside. It has made no commitment on the next step.
Expected rate cuts and hikes
The market prices a peak deposit rate around 3.00% in 2027, which implies two more quarter point rises. The next meeting is on 29 October 2026, and this reading is the most important input before it.
Bond yield differential
Not verified. Current German and United States government bond yields could not be confirmed to a standard worth printing, so no figure is given.
Inflation trendWhether price rises are speeding up, holding steady, or slowing down.
Rising. Headline inflation rose to 3.2% in August from 2.9% in July, with energy prices up 14.3% on the year. The Bank expects a peak late in 2026.
Economic growth trend
Stable. Output contracted by 0.2% in the first quarter of 2026 and grew in the second, which the Bank described as broad based across countries and sectors.
Risk sentimentWhether investors are feeling brave or frightened. When they are frightened, money tends to move toward the dollar, the yen and the Swiss franc.
Neutral. Nothing in the readings here shows a flight to safety, and the pair's fall reflects a firmer dollar after the Federal Reserve decision.
Market positioning
Not verified. Reliable positioning data could not be confirmed for this card, so no lean is claimed.
Carry trade attractiveness
Unattractive for the euro. Holding euros against dollars costs roughly one and a quarter to one and a half points a year before costs.
Core inflation pressure
Normal. Core inflation eased to 2.4% in August from 2.5%, above the 2% target but not accelerating. Services still contribute more to headline inflation than energy does.
Wage pressure
Normal. The Bank's wage tracker points to 2.7% negotiated wage growth in the first half of 2027, and Lagarde said wages had not responded materially to the energy shock.
Commodity price impact
Negative for the euro. Energy is the largest single driver of the inflation rise, and the euro area imports most of its energy, so higher prices raise inflation and weaken growth at the same time.
Energy dependence
Importer. The euro area buys most of its oil and gas from abroad, which is why a war in the Middle East shows up in its inflation figures within weeks.
