Expected stock reactionWhich way we expect the share price to go after the event. Positive means it rises, Negative means it falls, Mixed means it could go either way.
Mixed. The reported quarter should be solid. The direction will depend mainly on fiscal 2027 guidance, credit quality and operating margin expectations.
Action before the eventWhat we suggest you do before the event. Buy, Watch or Avoid.
Watch. Do not chase expensive short-term options before the report. The preferred trade is to act after guidance confirms direction. Buy a high-volume breakout above $86.80 after strong guidance. Consider a bearish put spread only if weak guidance pushes the stock below $70.
Why the stock is affectedThe link between the event and this company.
Affirm's value depends on transaction growth, credit performance, funding costs and future profit margins. Strong gross merchandise volume, or GMV, creates more revenue opportunities. Stable delinquencies reduce expected credit losses. Lower funding costs improve profit per loan. The fiscal 2027 forecast matters most because investors already know the company's Q4 target range. A strong annual forecast would support higher future revenue and valuation. Weak growth or rising credit losses would force investors to lower those estimates.
Catalyst confidenceHow sure we are that the event happens as described. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
The event is confirmed. I am 99% confident it occurs as scheduled. I assign a 65% probability that Q4 revenue reaches the top of guidance or slightly exceeds it. The fiscal 2027 outlook is less predictable and is the main uncertainty.
Stock-reaction confidenceHow sure we are that the stock reacts the way we expect. Scored out of 100. Higher means more sure.
74%. AFRM has a history of large earnings moves. I am confident the stock will react sharply if fiscal 2027 guidance is clearly above or below expectations. I have less confidence in direction before seeing that guidance.
When the market will reactThe moment the price is likely to move, such as at the announcement or at the next market open.
The first reaction should begin after the results are released on August 27. The main price discovery should occur during after-hours trading, the earnings call and the August 28 regular session. A guidance-driven move could continue for 1-3 trading days.
Effect on the businessWhat the event changes for the company itself, such as its sales, costs or profit.
Affirm previously guided Q4 GMV to $13.15 billion to $13.45 billion, revenue to $1.08 billion to $1.11 billion and GAAP operating margin to 9.5% to 11.5%. A result above these ranges would show that consumer demand and operating leverage remain strong. Stable delinquencies would also support future margins and funding access. Simple example: if Affirm processes an extra $100 million of GMV and earns revenue equal to about 8.5% of GMV, that could add roughly $8.5 million of revenue. This is an illustration, not a forecast.
Market expectations and forecastWhat investors already expect from this event, and the numbers being forecast.
The available consensus is approximately $1.107 billion of revenue and $0.35 of diluted earnings per share. Revenue expectations are already close to the top of company guidance. My forecast is $1.11 billion to $1.13 billion of revenue, $13.4 billion to $13.6 billion of GMV and a 10.5% to 12.0% GAAP operating margin. I cannot confirm a reliable single consensus figure for the full fiscal 2027 outlook. For trading purposes, the market likely needs projected GMV growth above 25%, continued GAAP profitability and no meaningful credit deterioration to produce a lasting rally. Recent price action and priced-in level Priced-in level: Medium. AFRM closed at $77.03. It is about 11.3% below its July 15 intraday high of $86.80, but about 7.7% above its July 31 close of $71.51. Its year-to-date return was about 3.5% through August 21. August 21 volume was about 2.39 million shares, below the roughly 5.80 million 12-month daily average. This suggests the stock is not entering earnings with extreme volume-driven excitement. Fintech peers have been mixed. PayPal was up about 6.1% year to date. SoFi was down about 31.6%. Klarna fell from $20.26 on August 6 to $14.33 on August 21, a decline of about 29.3%. AFRM's setup is therefore company-specific rather than part of a broad fintech rally.
Expected price move and durationHow far the share price may move because of this event, and how long that move may last.
Options-Implied Move The August 28, 2026 options imply approximately ±11.7%. The ± figure prices the size of the move, not its direction. Calculation using the August 21 midpoint around the $77 strike: call midpoint $4.35 plus put midpoint $4.65 equals a $9.00 straddle. $9.00 divided by the $77.03 share price equals 11.68%. Historical Event Analysis August 28, 2025 earnings: AFRM closed at $79.99 before the reaction and $88.46 in the next session. Move: +10.59% over one trading day. November 6, 2025 earnings: AFRM closed at $65.96 before the reaction and $73.62 in the next session. Move: +11.61% over one trading day. May 7, 2026 earnings: AFRM closed at $67.36 before the reaction and $64.01 in the next session. Move: -4.97% over one trading day. Historical Average Move Historical average move: ±9.1% across three comparable earnings events. Past reactions went both ways. Calculation: 10.59% plus 11.61% plus 4.97% equals 27.17%. Dividing by three equals an average absolute move of 9.06%, rounded to 9.1%. Our Expected Move +12% to +18% if fiscal 2027 guidance is clearly strong. -10% to -16% if growth, margins or credit guidance disappoints. The upside estimate is above the 9.1% historical average because a strong fiscal 2027 forecast could trigger a wider valuation reset. The downside range reflects the demanding revenue expectation and AFRM's sensitivity to credit concerns. Both ranges are close to the ±11.7% options price, but allow for a larger move if annual guidance creates a clear surprise. Impact Strength High. The report introduces a new annual outlook and can change expected growth, profitability and valuation at the same time. Estimated Duration 1-3 trading days. A reaction based only on quarterly revenue could fade quickly. A move caused by fiscal 2027 guidance, credit quality or a major margin change could last several weeks.
Result needed for a big moveWhat the outcome has to be for the stock to move a lot instead of a little.
A major upside move likely requires revenue above $1.12 billion, GMV above $13.45 billion, operating margin above 11.5% and fiscal 2027 GMV growth guidance above 25% with stable credit metrics. A major downside move would likely require revenue below $1.08 billion, operating margin below 9.5%, slower fiscal 2027 growth or evidence that delinquencies and credit losses are rising faster than expected.
Possible outcomesThe main ways the event could turn out, with the expected stock reaction for each one.
Positive scenario: Revenue reaches $1.12 billion or more, GMV exceeds $13.45 billion, operating margin beats 11.5% and fiscal 2027 guidance supports growth above 25%. Expected reaction: +12% to +18%. Neutral scenario: Q4 is near the top of guidance, but fiscal 2027 guidance is only in line. Expected reaction: -4% to +5%, with volatility falling after the report. Negative scenario: Revenue misses $1.08 billion, credit performance weakens or fiscal 2027 guidance falls below the market's growth assumptions. Expected reaction: -10% to -16%.
Other affected stocksOther companies that could move on the same news, such as suppliers and competitors.
SOFI and UPST could move as consumer-credit read-throughs. PYPL and KLAR could react as payment and installment-finance competitors. SHOP could receive a smaller merchant-demand read-through because Affirm is integrated into its commerce network.
What the market may be missingSomething we think investors have overlooked or read wrong.
Headline earnings per share may be affected by a possible release of Affirm's deferred tax valuation allowance. That would be a non-cash accounting benefit. Traders should separate this from operating performance. The more useful measures are GMV, revenue less transaction costs, operating margin, delinquencies and funding costs. A large accounting profit with weak credit trends would not be a clean positive result. The market may also underestimate Affirm Card growth. Continued card adoption could make Affirm useful for everyday purchases, increasing transaction frequency. The risk is that smaller purchases can produce lower revenue per transaction and change the company's revenue mix.
What else lands that dayOther news and events on the same day that could push the price around, and whether they help this trade, bury it, or work against it.
27 August 2026 is the first day of the Jackson Hole symposium, which runs to 29 August, and that matters more here than it would for most companies. Affirm lends to consumers and funds itself in credit markets, so its multiple moves with rate expectations directly rather than at one remove. A policy signal out of Jackson Hole can therefore push this stock in the opposite direction to its own results on the same afternoon. The day also carries initial jobless claims at 12:30 UTC, which is a live read on the consumer this business depends on, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics employment projections at 14:00 UTC, which does not trade. Affirm reports after the close at 21:00 UTC. Net effect: the results land into a session already trading the Federal Reserve, and the follow-through session on 28 August is still inside the symposium. What to expect on the day. Expect the regular session to trade rates rather than positioning into the print. The after-hours move from 21:00 UTC is the clean read on the quarter, and it is the only clean read you get, because the next morning is the second day of Jackson Hole. A hawkish signal can erase a good number here without anything about the business having changed, which is the specific way this trade goes wrong.
Main risksWhat could go wrong, and what would prove this call wrong.
Overall risk level: High. AFRM is volatile and options are pricing a double-digit move. A strong quarter can still produce a decline if annual guidance disappoints. Interest rates, consumer spending and unemployment can quickly change credit expectations. Short-term option buyers also face a sharp fall in implied volatility after earnings.
Other factorsAnything else worth knowing that the sections above do not cover.
Watch the wording around funding capacity, average cost of funds, 30-day delinquencies and net charge-offs. These details can outweigh a small revenue beat. Use the $86.80 July high as the main upside confirmation level. Use $70 as the first downside breakdown area. A move through either level should be supported by volume well above the recent 2 million to 4 million share range before you treat it as a lasting signal.
